Laboratory Water Analysis

SYCHEM owns and operates a fully-equipped laboratory where physicochemical and microbiological water analyses are conducted.

Physicochemical Analyses

All typical parameters such as pH, electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids (TDS), hardness, chloride, total and free chlorine, sulfates, etc. are determined in accordance with standard methods as referred in “Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater” by APHA – AWWA – WEF.

Additional analyses are conducted for the determination of BOD5, COD, suspended solids (SS) that are relevant to wastewater treatment, as well as more specialized analyses relevant to brackish water and sea water desalination, such as barium, boron, SDI, etc.

Microbiological Analyses

An innovative method is employed for the microbiological analyses that is not based on microbial cultures and ensures direct and reliable results within 24 hours.

All typical parameters such as total bacterial count, total coliforms, Escherichia coli, Enterococci and pseudomonas aeruginosa in our laboratory.

It is noted that, based on the Greek legislation article KYA Y2/2600/2001 for the “Quality of Water for Human Consumption” in accordance with directive 98/83/EK, the fecal coliform parameter has been replaced with the Escherichia Coli parameter, for more accurate determination.

The above mentioned innovative method has ISO certification, is approved by organizations such as US EPA, AOAC, IBWA, EBWA, and is included in standard “Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater”.

Legionella Analyses

SYCHEM S.A. has participated in a European Program for the detection and treatment of Legionella. At its laboratory SYCHEM employs an innovative analysis based on the genetic mechanism which provides the opportunity for detection of Legionella present in water samples within a 2-hour time frame.

Analysis Method: Fast immune based testing method for the detection of Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 of water dissolved antigen.

The method’s advantage compared to the conventional culture based method, is the high index of reliability, in combination with the minimal time requirements for the completion of the test which allows for the provision of new results upon receiving corrective measures should the initial sample be positive. In addition, the method detects the live as well as the dead bacteria, which fact contributes directly to the method’s accuracy while it is fully parameterized and allows for changes in the measurement levels in situations where different ranges of values are required.

Alternatively, the laboratory has the means to conduct the conventional culture based method of testing.
