SYCHEM through its subsidiary Bioenergy Crete as honored with the award for the «Best Biogas Plant below 1MW» in the AD and Biogas Industry Awards 2023.

The annual AD and Biogas Industry Awards competition was organized by the ADBA and WBA (World Biogas Association) in Birmingham on 29th March as part of UK AD & World Biogas Expo 2023.

The prestigious ceremony is the top event of the international biogas industry and this year there was a truly global shortlist of more than 60 companies and 9 well recognized judges. Bioenergy Crete, was the only participant from Greece and it was also awarded in 2019.

The award was received from the CEO of SYCHEM, Dr.-Ing Alexandros Yfantis.

“Bioenergy Crete” is a Biogas Power Plant with installed electrical power of 1 MW, located at the Industrial Area of Heraklion, Crete – Greece. The Biogas Plant was entirely designed and constructed by SYCHEM Group, applying cutting-edge technologies at the most critical points of production process such as the collection and management of the incoming organic waste, the deodorization system, the pasteurization process, the reuse of produced heat energy and the innovative system for the biological treatment of the digestate effluent. Recently “Bioenergy Crete” has launched BIOSFER, a concentrated pasteurized and stabilized product coming from digestate.  Rich in amino acids, it is acting as a powerful biofertilizer with unique properties as proven from more than 3 years of extended field trials.

The plant is considered a prototype in cyclic economy and the feedstock is exclusively organic waste such as food residues and all kind of animal byproducts.

SYCHEM successfully concluded the delivery of a 30.000 CMD plant (2 trains of 15.000 CMD) for the project of Jorf Lasfar OCP in Morocco.

The equipment was fully prefabricated and tested in the state of the art industrial facilities of SYCHEM in Crete. The advanced modular design allow the fast re-assembly of plant. It is expected that the whole project will be fully operational in 12 months from order confirmation. The actual lead time from order to operation will be less than 12 months and this is a real record even in normal conditions (not taking into account the extreme delays in logistics and equipment supply in 2022).

The President & CEO of SYCHEM, Dr.-Ing Alexandros Yfantis, participates in the 7th Economic Forum to be held in Delphi, April 6-9, 2022. At the “Delphi Economic Forum” (https://delphiforum.gr/events/annual -conference/delphi-economic-forum-vii) executives & persons from the political, economic & business scene of the country participate, in an effort to promote innovative ideas for sustainable and competitive development in Europe and the wider Eastern Mediterranean region.

On April 8, Mr. A. Yfantis will participate in a panel discussion on “Energy Efficiency in a Water Supply System” within the “Energy, Infrastructure & Connectivity” section

The electromechanical installations of Air Conditioning and Domestic Hot Water Production in the residential complex “Castle Residence”, in Limassol, Cyprus, were successfully completed.

The consortium “Marina Limassol Joint Venture” assigned to Yfantis Engineering consulting office the project of the innovative geothermal system to meet the requirements for cooling, heating and domestic hot water for the residential complex.

SYCHEM CYPRUS LTD undertook the fully construction of the central facilities, central geothermal engine room, systems’ commissioning, start-up as well as their integration into a central BMS (Building management system) in order to maximize energy efficiency.

The innovative design philosophy of the system is based on energy integration through a combined system of geothermal and heat recovery. The complex consists of 66 luxury apartments. A mechanical cupboard is installed to each apartment, with an autonomous water-cooled heat pump in order to meet its energy needs.

Each apartment is connected with the central geothermal system, where through specialized design and smart operating algorithms is ensured the maximum energy efficiency and multiple advantages (aesthetic superiority, no outdoor air conditioning units).

As a result, no engine floor is required for the installation of HVAC units, while at the same time, the life of the heat pumps and mechanical equipment is maximized, as they are not exposed at the environmental conditions (salty sea air).

The operation control of the systems is performed through a BMS, that has an easy-to-understand graphical interface, with remote control ability, energy analyzes and recordings of all important parameters.

The combined open loop de-centralized geothermal and management system of “Castle Residence” has been operating successfully since January 2021 and is one of the largest energy integration and energy saving projects in Cyprus.

Despite the difficult and unprecedented times that touristic sector experiences, the upgrade and expansion of electromechanical installations of cooling and domestic hot water production were completed successfully on behalf of ARINA BEACH RESORT 4*hotel.

The hotel Arina Beach Resort, while undergoing a major expansion and renovation with new rooms, common areas and new swimming pools, assigned to Yfantis Engineering consulting office the project of the innovative geothermal system to meet the new requirements for cooling and heating for the total hotel.

Sychem S.A undertook the fully reconstruction of the central facilities, systems’ commissioning, start-up as well as their integration to the BMS central management system in order to maximise energy efficiency.

The design philosophy is based on energy integration via a combined system of geothermal – energy recovery and desalination.

For the cooling system, in particular, three water-cooled chillers with nominal cooling power of 1,41 MW and total Heat Recovery of 1,57 MW were installed, saving energy for the heating requirements of domestic hot water production and swimming pools as well as one desalination unit of 250 m3 per day.

The BMS System controls the operation of all systems by implementing process automation and allows for energy and sources savings. The user friendly BMS system ensures easy operation of all systems with remote control and monitoring via energy analysis and recording of parameters.

The combined system of energy production and management of ARINA BEACH RESORT 4* has been successfully operated during the holiday season of 2020 and it is considered as one of the greatest projects of energy completion and integration in Greece using geothermal energy.

SYCHEM through its subsidiary Technical Bioenergy Crete (TBK) was honored with the award for the «Best Circular City Biogas plant» and the distinction for the «Best Biogas Plant below 1MW» in the AD and Biogas Industry Awards 2019.

The annual AD and Biogas Industry Awards competition is organized by the ADBA and WBA (World Biogas Association) in Birmingham on 3rd July as part of UK AD & World Biogas Expo 2019.

The prestigious ceremony is the top event of the international biogas industry and this year there was a truly global shortlist of more than 60 companies and 9 well recognized judges. TBK, was the only participant from Greece, applied in two out of the 12 categories and was awarded in both of them.

The awards were received from the CEO of SYCHEM, Dr.-Ing Alexandros Yfantis.

TBK is the owner and operator of a Biogas Power Plant with installed power of 1 MW, located at the Industrial Area of Heraklion, Crete – Greece. The plant started its commercial operation in January 2017 at 500 kWel and expanded in July 2018 up to 1 MW kWel.

The plant is considered a prototype for the energy use of all kind of municipal organic waste as well as for animal byproducts. The plant is not using any kind of energy crops.

The opening ceremony of the desalination plant with a nominal capacity of 2.500 m3 per day constructed by SYCHEM took place on the 22nd of May 2019 at Parikia, Paros. The Desalination unit will produce potable water of excellent quality, confirmed by regular tests and lab analyses according to the Greek and E.U legislation.

The President and Managing Director of SYCHEM S.A. Dr.-Ing A. Yfantis stated also the below:

“ It is a great honor for SYCHEM to be the leading company in water treatment- desalination systems production in Greece with 70% of its annual turnover as exports. Our plants can be found in over 30 countries around the world!

We consider  that taking over desalination plants’ operation in our islands is rather a social responsibility than business”.
